More on OpenIO SDS installation (and its ease of use)

A couple of weeks ago we hosted a webinar around our joint solution with Ambedded, an ARM-based object storage appliance manufacturer. 

In the webinar, Enrico mentioned that the appliance will come with Linux pre-installed, and that the OpenIO SDS configuration will take just 20 minutes. The nice thing is that it will take 20 minutes no matter how many nodes you have in the cluster, and the process is more or less the same as you would expect for an x86 cluster.


How does it work?

OpenIO SDS is an open source solution, and all the code, as well as the binaries, are freely available for download. The difference between the free and paid versions is the support level you'll get, plus a few tools to make life easier, including a WebUI and deployment tools.

In the following Acsiinema videos you'll see one of the scripts we use to deploy OpenIO SDS. It includes the whole installation process and tests to check if everything works as expected.

As you'll see in the video, we make extensive use of Ansible to deploy our products, but even if you are not familiar with this tool I can tell you that all the important tunables are saved in single configuration file that you can edit easily with a text editor.

Here the most important steps of the process:

  • At the beginning we download the Ansible roles required for the playbooks.
  • Then the first ansible playbook sets up the network and HW (formatting drives).
  • The second playbook, starting at 01:17, sets the database needed by keystone up.
  • Third playbook (starting at 03:22) sets up the keystone OpenStack identity service, which is used for swift API authentication.
  • The fourth one (starting at 10:11) deploys the OpenIO SDS.
  • The fifth (starting at 25:06) is all about platform testing.


As you can see, OpenIO SDS is very easy to install and configure. It just takes 20 minutes, no matter the size of the cluster. This is a basic installation with standard specifications, but changing and reapplying a new configuration won't take much longer.
